Regatta Clients

Welcome to the “rigging” area. To encourage community participation, we are attempting to make the GLRF Regatta Advisory Group as transparent as possible. We will post the group’s meeting notes as well as its recommendations.

GLRF supports all regattas where gay and lesbian rowers have an opportunity to compete. However, any regatta, no matter the size, requires a certain level of planning and organization. To do that requires the time of volunteers from the local rowing community. We want to ensure those energies are well spent.

Listed below are regatta summaries. We need your thoughts and ideas on what race formats and alternate structures might work best for the given venue and the expected number of participants. Share your experiences of what worked well at regattas you have attended and what they did to make you feel welcome and accepted. Your input is just as important on how to improve a standard regatta as your ideas on how to structure a rowing event for 25 or 50 people (and that includes making an event chick friendly!) Night racing? Fun row? 500m. sprints? Single category boat races? All ideas are welcome and one begets another.

Thanks for getting involved. This forum is intended for the GLRF worldwide rowing community. Therefore, everyone is asked to post their input on the GLRF ALL OARS message board, in the category marked Regatta Advisory Input.

Name: 2008 TdP Régate en aller-retour

Date: 11 May 2008

Venue: Base Nautique, Choisy-le-Roi, France

Description: Description: GLRF had previously visited this venue in December 2006 and thus was able to provide a few photographs of the venue and has a knowledge of the rowing centre. The regatta is not intended to be a very formal, competitive event but rather a friendly event with a sport challenge. The Advisory Group provided an initial set of comments that we felt would represent the majority of the comments from the community. We welcome any other comments and would be glad to pass them along to the organizing committee for incorporation in the current regatta or for consideration in follow on regatta events.

Name: 2008 Eurogames Regatta

Date: 26 - 30 Jul 2008

Venue: To be determined, Barcelona, Espana

Description: GLRF visited Barcelona in March 2007 to review the available rowing facilities and options for the European gay and lesbian rowing community for Eurogames 2008. Organizational, political, and environmental factors make hosting a regatta in Barcelona difficult. Currently, there is no regatta organizing committee identified and neither the local rowing federation nor the local rowing clubs are capable or available to assist. Factions of conservatism within the Barcelona rowing region may impede access to boats or organizational support. The high heat in Barcelona in July almost predicates an early morning or early evening regatta. Two options are available to host a rowing regatta: a masters length sprint race at a competition water facility south of Barcelona and a coastal rowing regatta based out of the Barcelona harbor. Rowers are invited to weigh the factors identified in this report and provide their preferences on the GLRF All Oars message board. The last time rowing was featured at the Eurogames was in Munich in 2004, at the Oberschleissheim Championship rowing course. The event ultimately had 70 registrants.
