One Huge Collegiate Regatta
(text courtesy of Dad Vail Organizing Committee)
The Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, with over 100 colleges and Universities participating from the US. and Canada.
The regatta has grown from an acorn event of three schools into a premier two-day rowing competition. This year, 115 teams face off in nineteen boat categories (8+, 4+, and 2-) comprising 150 races on the Schuylkill River’s 2,000 meter course. Wow!
Over 3,000 rowers are expected from the United States and Canada to take their shot at winning a medal on Friday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10. The championship represents the end of the spring racing season for most programs. But, some will go on to the IRA and the Henley Royal Regatta in London.
Organizers have added a third day (Thursday, May 8) for race preparations. This will allow crews to set up, weigh in, become familiar with the Schuylkill course, and go through their pre-race warm up runs.
