General Information
This fall you are invited to experience the beauty of New England from the banks of the Charles River and enjoy America's Fall Rowing Festival, the Head Of The Charles® regatta. More than 7,000 athletes from around the world compete in 48 different race events: 24 womens and 24 mens.. The Regatta encompasses two-days and attracts up to 300,000 spectators during the October weekend. This year will also feature two special events: an Olympic Row By Victory Lap featuring the US Olympic 2004 mens and womens eights medal winners and a special double event featuring US Olympic rower Ariel Jones and US National Adaptive Rowing Team member Sarah Gilbert.
"Head" races, a class of regattas, are generally longer than the Olympic sprint distance of 2000m or 1 1/4 mile. They can range from 2 - 5 miles. The Head of the Charles is 3 miles long. Boats race against each other and the clock, starting sequentially approximately fifteen seconds apart. Winners of each race receive the honorary title of "Head of the River" or, in this case, "Head Of The Charles."
