About This Group

Appearing on the sands of Mother's Beach in Marina Del Rey like Endora's arrival in Samantha’s living room, the West Hollywood Oars was a rowing squad created to compete at the 1998 Amsterdam Gay Games. The name stayed with us through the years and now the squad has become a social group that serves to connect local gay and lesbian rowers, coxies, coaches, and our straight rowing friends. Our group counts members from the Los Angeles Rowing Club, the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center, the California Yacht Club, the Long Beach Rowing Association, and the Southern California Scullers Club. We get together to talk rowing, to help rowers find each other, to help those looking to find rowing in the Los Angeles area, and to help rowers looking to form a squad to compete at a regatta. 2. The West Hollywood Oars (WHOars) social group invite rowers, active and inactive, in the LA area to a get together at Rocco's. We're looking at putting together a competitive squad but it would be great to meet all the rowers in the LA area. Coxies are most welcome! University rowers are welcome but you may need ID to get into the bar. We'll check on that. Have you joined the GLRF WHOars social group? No? Seriously? What are you thinking? Join! Date: 21 September 2019 Time: 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm Location: Rocco's WeHo Sports Bar 8900 Santa Monica Blvd West Hollywood, CA 90069 United States

I Brian, I Just wanted to check if this group is still active, and whether you guys have social meets ups where we can meet each other and maybe find people to row with? Regards Sid
  6. Are there any members of the WHOars going to compete in Cleveland. I moved to LA about a year ago. Joined LARC and hoping to meet some other people wanting to row at the Gay Games 2014.

    Whoars? Still Active?

Active in a very informal way. At this point, still a bit of a loose knit group with some folks not rowing, others rowing at Los Angeles Rowing Club, UCLA Aquatic Center (me), and still others at Long Beach Rowing Association. After the Outgames, I'll try to organize and meet up and see if we can get some interest in a boat. - Brian
  8. Looking to get back into rowing actively with a team. Are you all still together?

    Rowers Visiting La

Email Laura Harrington at LARC. She seems to be the contact person at LARC who helps visitors and new members. If not, she can put you in touch with the right person. We have have sculls at LARC, but you have to go through a whole skills test thing to get to use them. Easier to get a place in an 8+. Laura's email is ada.rocco@yahoo.com. You can tell her Shannon Halwes thought she'd be the person to contact. Hope to see you on the water! Shannon

    Rowers Visiting La

  13. From time to time, GLRF members visit LA and look to connect with rowers and get some time on the water. This group is a great resource to help people. In Los Angeles, there are three rowing clubs in Marina Del Rey, down from four. WHoars members row with all three clubs although the majority belong to LARC. Los Angeles Rowing Club - (community club) California Yacht Club - (private club) UCLA Aquatic Center - (affiliation) and single sculls only Reply to this topic with the dates and group members can offer ideas and suggestions.
