In its third time as a Paralympic sport, para-rowing has been growing in competitiveness exponentially. Leading up to this year's Paralympic Games the tightness of racing has become evident and World Best Times continue to fall. The Rio 2016 Paralympic para-rowing regatta goes from 9-11 September 2016 on the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Rachel Morris of Great Britain set the standard when she claimed a new World Best Time in the para women's single sculls at the 2016 World Rowing Cup III in Poznan, Poland.  This was the first final of the regatta and it was raced in bumpy tail wind conditions.

With a women’s single sculler, Micheen Thornycroft, who made the B-final at the 2015 World Rowing Championships, rowing fans have started to take note of this emerging rowing nation. Junior Nathan Wegbreit of the Georgetown University men's rowing team is used to representing his school when he takes to the water. However, on Sunday, May 8, Wegbreit was not with his normal GU teammates at the 2016 National Invitational Rowing Championships. Instead, he was rowing with Kenny Marrs, a Georgetown freshman, as the only collegiate crew in an adaptive rowing race.

As well as holding the Final Paralympic Qualification Regatta, Gavirate, Italy played host last week to the tenth  Gavirate International Para-Rowing Regatta. The two events took place simultaneously attracting significant para-rowing talent from around the world.
